Random Thoughts

Sorry for the delay in postings.

On Monday, I went to the Sojourner Forum at GW on Monday evening. Got to actually greet and shake hands with the "Big Three": Hillary, Edwards and Obama. Very impressed by all of them. Each has their own special type of charisma, though Edwards and Obama seemed to be more genuine. Great evening. Also met Andrew Sullivan. My fellow lefty bloggers will probably not want to hear this, but he is a very cool guy in person. Kinda like my chance meeting with the "Prince of Darkness" Novak back at a 92 Clinton rally. He actually introduced himself to me and my buddy.

Missed the Repubs' debate last night. I was at RFK watching my Buccos defeat the Nats. Don't have Tivo, so will have to watch it online. Read in the Post that they were all tap dancing away from GW. Love that Republican infighting:)

Two very interesting pieces from two of the Capitol Hill tabloids this morning. The decline of Tony Soprano's crime family as an allegory for that of the Bush Administration? That is what Howard Mortman posits in today's Politico. The focus of his piece is his representation of Carmella Soprano - who over the course of the show has gone from being a fan of Hillary Clinton to a voter for GW- as the type of voter that the Republicans need to win in 2008. (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0607/4346.html). BTW, speaking for all rabid fans of the show, I hope that Tony gets that bastard Phil Leotardo on Sunday.

From today's Hill, there is an excellent article with quotes from service employees on Capitol Hill on how they are treated by others who work there. Members of Congress come across very well. Interns (my client base in my job) come across as rude, entitled and petulant. I may have to teach them a Dale Carnegie course. (http://thehill.com/cover-stories/haughty-and-nice-2007-06-06.html)

Tell later.

Welcome to the Hughes Review

Greetings Readers,

Welcome to the Hughes Review. The Hughes Review will be comprised of my takes on the upcoming 2008 presidential election. My perspective is that of an African-American liberal Democratic political junkie in his late-thirties.

Although, this blog will have a definite political bent, at times, I may throw in a bit of commentary on some of my other interests: my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers, the Sopranos and classic rock and r&b.

To start off, I want to comment on President Bush and the Republican presidential field. I cannot believe that things could get even worse for W. His approval rating is 28%, he is still wallowing in the Gonzales affair, conservatives are about to rebel against him on the immigration bill before Congress. Then, finally former President Jimmy Carter, violated the unwritten rule of the world's most exclusive club: current and former POTUS's, by attacking Bush's foreign policy.

It will be interesting to see how the Republican candidates walk the fine line of supporting the President in order to satisfy the conservative base of the party in the primaries, and distancing themselves from this sinking ship in order to appeal to Democrats and independents in the general election.

Stay tuned.
